Facelift procedure

The facelift procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Once you are asleep, Dr. Kwon will begin by marking the planned incisions, typically along the hairline and around the ears, to ensure discreet placement. The skin is gently lifted, and the underlying tissues are tightened to restore youthful contours and address sagging. This may involve repositioning the muscles and removing excess skin to enhance the overall facial structure.

If additional concerns, such as neck sagging or excess fat, were discussed during your pre-operative consultation, procedures like a neck lift or liposuction may be performed simultaneously to achieve a more complete rejuvenation.

Upon completing the facelift and any adjunctive procedures, Dr. Kwon will carefully close the incisions with fine sutures. A light bandage may be applied to support the healing process, and cool packs will be provided to reduce swelling and ensure your comfort.

What aspects of the face can be altered?

The face is composed of various components, often referred to as "facial units," that can be altered through a facelift. The primary facial units frequently modified during surgery include:

  • The jawline
  • The neck area
  • The cheeks
  • The forehead

Addressing any of these facial units typically involves repositioning underlying muscles, removing excess skin, and tightening the skin to restore youthful contours. For instance, the jawline and neck are often targeted to eliminate sagging skin and fatty tissue, while the cheeks and forehead may be lifted to enhance facial definition.

Common facial concerns addressed during a facelift include:

  • Sagging skin around the jawline and neck
  • Loss of volume in the cheeks
  • Wrinkles and deep lines along the face

A total facelift involves addressing the entire facial structure. Common procedures performed during a facelift include:

  • Lifting and tightening the skin to restore a youthful appearance
  • Removing excess fat and tissue from the jawline and neck
  • Repositioning the cheeks and tightening the underlying muscles
  • Smoothing out wrinkles and deep lines for a refreshed look

Facelift FAQs

  • What is a facelift and how does it work?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin and underlying tissues to restore a youthful appearance. It addresses sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and loss of facial volume by repositioning muscles and removing excess skin.

  • Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

Ideal candidates are individuals who are in good health, have sagging skin or deep wrinkles in the face, and desire a more youthful appearance. People in their 40s to 60s often benefit most from the procedure.

  • How long does the recovery take after a facelift?

Recovery typically takes about 2-3 weeks, with most patients returning to work and normal activities after 1-2 weeks. Swelling and bruising are common but should subside within a few weeks.

  • Are the results of a facelift permanent?

While a facelift provides long-lasting results, it cannot stop the natural aging process. However, the improvements from the surgery can last for many years, with patients often looking younger for a decade or more.

  • What are the risks associated with a facelift?

Like any surgery, a facelift comes with potential risks, such as infection, scarring, nerve damage, or anesthesia complications. Choosing a skilled surgeon can help minimize these risks.
